Potentially explosive reefer containers are causing disruption at US ports

Over the last few days, some ports in the US have been dealing with a potentially explosive issue – suspect reefer containers apparently at risk of explosion.

These containers have been apparently improperly serviced in Vietnam. Containers have previously exploded in China and Brazil – killing three and injuring many more.

Reports originally suggested that eighty refrigerated containers had been put into isolation at the Port of Seattle for ‘safety reasons’ putting hundreds of truck drivers in limbo.

But, a spokesperson at the Port of Seattle has told PS: “We have eight possible suspect containers isolated by the shipping lines based on initial information that made them concerned”.

We've validated that four of them were serviced in Vietnam – hence, three containers in Tacoma and one container in Seattle have been placed on operational hold by the Coast Guard.

AMERIKAANSE HAVENWERKERS BOND ILWU WAARSCHUWT LEDEN EN PUBLIEK VOOR ONTPLOFFENDE REEFER CONTAINERS.

Safety protocols established to protect dockworkers, public from potentially explosive refrigerated containers West Coast arbitrator recognizes serious risk of exploding reefers, sets safety protocols.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (NOVEMBER 9, 2011) – The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has announced to its members at 30 West Coast ports the results of an arbitration hearing in which safety procedures designed to protect dockworkers and the public from potentially explosive refrigerated containers, or “reefers” were established. As a result of counterfeit coolant that has been added to reefer cooling systems in Vietnam, three workers have been killed and several others wounded by spontaneous explosions that have occurred in other countries. Thousands of at-risk containers are believed to be in circulation and making their way to American ports.

Explosiegevaar reefercontainers
